The course is taught by Thedra Cullar-Ledford. Thedra is owner of Independence Art Studios, a 10-year veteran college art teacher, and professional artist represented by McClain Gallery in Houston. She earned her BFA cum laude in Painting from California College of the Arts, and an MA in Fine Art (Sculpture and Printmaking) from Oxford University

The class meets on six Sunday afternoons, from 1 – 4 p.m.
October 25th
November 1st, 8th, and 22nd
December 6th and 13th
HSPVA requires 10 to 12 pieces, including two-dimensional pieces, three-dimensional pieces, and photography. We will explore the principles and elements of design as a guide to create works in each of these three basic media
The principles of design include:
- Balance, symmetry and asymmetry
- Proportion
- Rhythm and repetition
- Emphasis
- Harmony and the pleasing unity of all elements
- Variety
The elements of design include:
- Line
- Shape and form
- Space
- Color
- Texture
- Media
- Value
Specifically, we’ll create:
- drawings, using charcoal, graphite and ink on paper
- paintings, using acrylic on canvas
- sculptures using wire and carved cast plaster
- photographs using digital cameras and prints
Each class will involve demonstration, hands-on practice, critique, and exposure to examples from both historical and contemporary art. Class time will be spent learning new skills and assessing finished works. Most of the time necessary to create the actual portfolio pieces will need to be spent at home. This is not a small commitment. Additionally, students will be expected to keep a sketchbook that captures their ideas, doodles, thoughts and explorations during the course to use as source material for course projects.
The fee for the entire course of six classes is $370, paid in advance. An additional $30 supply fee takes care of all necessary materials and supplies except for a digital camera and the costs for making photographic prints. Advanced students who only need help with specific areas can enroll in individual classes for $75 per session. Students who complete the entire course are eligible to attend our HSPVA Visual Arts Audition Practice Workshop (normally $100) for free.
Due to the intense nature of the course, there is no time for make up classes if one is missed, though we can provide individual help to ensure that students don’t fall behind.
