ArtLab 2012 Creative Summer Camp

A one-of-a-kind adventure into creative fun and individual expression led by the guy who paints himself blue and that crazy red-headed lady.

Last year was an amazing experience for kids, counselors and teachers alike. Grant said it was “better than chocolate camp!” which we took to be quite a compliment. Check out a whole bunch of photos here.

ArtLab 2012 will be Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 22
at Independence Art Studios, 419 Janisch Road 77018 (map here)

Camp runs from 9 a.m.−2 p.m. with extended day available until 5 p.m. Program fee: $300 per week. Extended day: $100/week. Supplies $50/child. (Sorry, no daily rates available.)

Created for kids ages 8−13. Since we customize the experience to match and expand each child’s abilities, interests and experience, we can accept no more than 30 campers who will be divided up into three groups.

The program is led by Mitch Pengra, a nationally-recognized art teacher at The Parish School, and Thedra Cullar-Ledford, a widely-exhibited artist, college art teacher, and co-owner of Independence Art Studios.

To register, please complete this registration form and follow the instructions at the bottom for payment.

If you have questions, you can e-mail Mitch or call Thedra at 646-269-4132.

We can’t wait to see you!

“ArtLab is better than chocolate camp!”

Grant was right about that one. What a great, rocking three weeks of art, fun and awesomeness. We’re too worn out to write much about it yet, but here are a few photos from just one day. More to come soon!

Thanks to all of the great young artists who made this first year of ArtLab a blast.

Independence Art Studios

A working studio environment for professional artists located just outside the Loop on the north side of Houston. It is an urban oasis — inside the city with everything it has to offer while at the same time providing exposure to the natural environment.

Instructors

Thedra Cullar-Ledford

Born in Abilene, Texas, raised in Mexico City and on the Texas/Mexico border in a little town called Eagle Pass. Moved alone to Dallas to attend Arts Magnet High School. Full scholarship to California College of the Arts for a BFA cum laude in Painting, then to Oxford University in the UK for a masters in printmaking and sculpture. Moved 16 times in 20 years but is happy to be settled in Houston. She makes art, teaches college and runs Independence Art Studios. Married with two sons, 9 and 17. Her art typically involves carefully arranged collections of everyday objects, presented in some sort of container in a way that makes a statement. It’s a mash-up of conceptualism, minimalism, storytelling, autobiography and careful craft.

HSPVA Portfolio Prep Course

This is an intensive six-class course intended to provide students with the skills and opportunities to build a successful portfolio to be used when applying to the Houston HSPVA visual arts program. Ideally, students should already have middle school art class experience and be internally motivated to do the hard work necessary for a successful application to this top school. (There is, of course, no guarantee that the completion of this course will result in acceptance to HSPVA.)

The course is taught by Thedra Cullar-Ledford. Thedra is owner of Independence Art Studios, a 10-year veteran college art teacher, and professional artist represented by McClain Gallery in Houston. She earned her BFA cum laude in Painting from California College of the Arts, and an MA in Fine Art (Sculpture and Printmaking) from Oxford University

The class meets on six Sunday afternoons, from 1 – 4 p.m.
October 25th
November 1st, 8th, and 22nd
December 6th and 13th

HSPVA requires 10 to 12 pieces, including two-dimensional pieces, three-dimensional pieces, and photography. We will explore the principles and elements of design as a guide to create works in each of these three basic media

The principles of design include:
- Balance, symmetry and asymmetry
- Proportion
- Rhythm and repetition
- Emphasis
- Harmony and the pleasing unity of all elements
- Variety

The elements of design include:
- Line
- Shape and form
- Space
- Color
- Texture
- Media
- Value

Specifically, we’ll create:
- drawings, using charcoal, graphite and ink on paper
- paintings, using acrylic on canvas
- sculptures using wire and carved cast plaster
- photographs using digital cameras and prints

Each class will involve demonstration, hands-on practice, critique, and exposure to examples from both historical and contemporary art. Class time will be spent learning new skills and assessing finished works. Most of the time necessary to create the actual portfolio pieces will need to be spent at home. This is not a small commitment. Additionally, students will be expected to keep a sketchbook that captures their ideas, doodles, thoughts and explorations during the course to use as source material for course projects.

The fee for the entire course of six classes is $370, paid in advance. An additional $30 supply fee takes care of all necessary materials and supplies except for a digital camera and the costs for making photographic prints. Advanced students who only need help with specific areas can enroll in individual classes for $75 per session. Students who complete the entire course are eligible to attend our HSPVA Visual Arts Audition Practice Workshop (normally $100) for free.

Due to the intense nature of the course, there is no time for make up classes if one is missed, though we can provide individual help to ensure that students don’t fall behind.

Two new students tonight

still-lifeWord is getting out quickly about our Wednesday night classes. We’ll be starting on a new project next Wednesday, so it’s a good time to join us.

First class in the new studio building

Wow. I’m on top of the world. I just taught my first class in my own back yard. I have two students, a 40-something architect and his gifted 11-year old daughter. We’re getting her started on a good portfolio for an HSPVA application later on.

We’re still sort of camping. There’s no insulation or dry wall, but we’ve got AC and lights running off extension cords, but that won’t be too much longer.

Class is every Wednesday night, from 6 – 9 p.m. and we can take up to seven students. Fee is $70 per session. All levels and media are welcome for drawing and painting.
