We are very excited and proud to host an exhibition of work by my dear friend Tina Horenkamp Simonton from Birmingham, Alabama.

She and I were in the painting program at California College of the Arts together and I can honestly say that she’s the best painter I know. In fact, I gave up painting for years because I figured there was no point even trying when amazing talents like Tina are out there.

Tina’s work has been grossly under-appreciated over the years — a situation that we aim to fix. Independence Art Studios is all about helping artists we like take their careers to the next level so all proceeds from sales go directly to the artists.

Last year was an amazing experience for kids, counselors and teachers alike. One student, Grant, said it was “better than chocolate camp!” which we took to be quite a compliment. Check out a whole bunch of photos from last year.

ArtLab is for all kids ages 8−13, but since we customize the experience to match and expand each child’s abilities, interests and experience, we can accept no more than 30 campers. We’ll divide up into small groups that give us a high teacher-to-student ratio so that no student loses interest while they’re waiting for help. Compared to other programs in the area, we do more exciting projects at a lower cost to parents. We also offer the option to extend the fun until you can pick them up after work.

ArtLab runs from Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 22
Camp is from 9 a.m.−2 p.m. with extended day available until 5 p.m.
Registration for each week is available, though the kids get more out of the experience by participating in all three weeks because each week builds on the work done in the previous one.

What will my kid do?
We cover all of the basics – drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and even video – but the program is anything but basic. This isn’t a place where you have to color inside the lines.

Extended day: $100/week.
